About the ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Standard

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the world's first international standard for AI management systems, entitled "ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Information technology — Artificial intelligence — Management system — Requirements." It sets out requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AIMS within organizations that develop, provide, or use AI-based products or services.

The standard follows the same harmonized high-level structure (Annex SL) used across other ISO management system standards such as ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 27001, with core requirements set out in clauses 4–10 — making it straightforward to integrate with an organization's existing management systems. Annex A sets out a reference set of AI-specific controls, covering areas such as AI policies, internal organization, resources, AI system impact assessment, AI system lifecycle, data for AI systems, and third-party/customer relationships. Annex B provides implementation guidance for those controls, and Annex C gives additional background on AI-related organizational objectives and risk sources.
